Electrical symbols

Scientists and engineers working with electrical circuits require a shorthand and recognisable set of codes to make their work easier to understand. Below is a table of symbols with their titles and descriptions.

Electrical symbol for a wire Wire The connecting cable that is used to make circuits
Electrical symbol for a cell Cell A chemical store or electricity that can be converted to electrical energy
Electrical symbol for a battery Battery 2 or more cells connected in series
Electrical symbol for a voltmeter Voltmeter A meter put across a component to find out how much energy it is using
Electrical symbol for an ammeter Ammeter A device used to show how much current is flowing in a part of a circuit
Electrical symbol for an ohmmeter Ohmmeter A device to measure the resistance of a component in a circuit
Electrical symbol for an open switch Open switch A device that casues a break in a circuit
Electrical symbol for a closed switch Closed switch A device that allows the completion of an open circuit
Electrical symbol for a motor Motor A device that converts electrical energy into motion
Electrical symbol for a speaker Speaker A device that converts electrical energy into sound energy
Electrical symbol for a lamp Lamp A device that converts electrical energy into light energy
Electrical symbol for a buzzer Buzzer A device that converts electrical energy into sound energy
Electrical symbol for a resistor Resistor A device that converts electrical energy to heat energy
Electrical symbol for a variable resistor Variable resistor A device that can change the amount of resistance in a circuit
Electrical symbol for a fuse Fuse A device that prevents too high a current in a circuit
Electrical symbol for a Power supply Power supply A device that can be plugged in to the mains electrical supply to provide a direct current supply

Crossword Exercise

In the crossword below the cluse are images and you are to enter the title of the symbol into the grid. Click on the number in the grid to reveal the picture related to the crossword entry.
Please be aware that where you have a symbol for a two word symbol title, the crossword removes the space between the two words. So an open switch becomes openswitch. Rembmer it is better to try to remember what the symbols are, and not to look back in the table. Once you have completed all the symbols that you can do you should review the ones that you don't know.

Please be careful with spelling, because crosswords need all of the correct letters in the right order.
